The Godfather of Stencil Graffiti: Blek Le Rat

Blek le Rat was born Xavier Prou in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris in 1952. He is considered the godfather of stencil graffiti art. He studied painting and architecture. He began his artwork in Paris in 1981. Since then he has had a great influence on today’s graffiti and “guerilla art” movements, his main motivation being social consciousness and the desire to bring art to the people. British graffiti artist Banksy has acknowledged Blek’s influence saying “every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek Le Rat has done it as well, only twenty years earlier.”

The Street Art Of Adres

Adres is an artist from Lisbon, Portugal who works in the mediums of graffiti, stencils, paste ups and sculptures. His work is very similar to Banksy and Blek Le Rat.

Roadsworth’s Street Artworks

Peter Gibson aka Roadsworth began painting the streets of Montreal in the fall of 2001. Initially motivated by a desire for more bike paths in the city and a questioning of “car culture” in general, he continued to develop a language around street markings and other elements of the urban landscape using a primarily stencil based technique. In the fall of 2004, Roadsworth was arrested for his nocturnal activities and charged with 53 counts of mischief.

The Graffiti Of Banksy

Banksy is a notorious English graffiti artist. His biography is of much controversy and myths. According the most common version of his real name Robin Banks, He was born in 1974 and he lives in Bristol. Banksy’s work was born out of the Bristol underground scene which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. His artworks are often satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics. His street art combines graffiti writing with a distinctive stenciling technique. His work can be seen in the film “Children of Men” [The image of two kissing policemen.]
