Linnea Strid was born in a small Swedish village where she lived until she was 16, before her family decided to move to Fuengirola in Southern Spain. She lived there during her teens and it was here that she started up her artistic career with several exhibitions.

In 2004 she moved back to Sweden and attended art schools for four years. Strid now lives in Uppsala, Sweden, and is working as an artist full-time. She knew when she was a small child that some day she would become an artist. Strid likes to paint in a photo realistic style, but always with the strong desire to convey an odd feeling, a forgotten memory, or maybe just something that is typical of her own little world.

Brian Dettmer, who is also known as ‘The Book Surgeon’ uses knives, tweezers and surgical tools to carve old dictionaries and encyclopedias into amazing works of art.

Born in 1974, in Chicago, Brian Dettmer studied art at Colombia College, where he focused on painting.  The artist started exploring the relationship between text, language and art during his time working in a signage store. He began producing paintings based on sign language, Braille and Morse Code, then moved on to layered works that involved pasting newspaper and book pages to a canvas.

Christopher Wilde is a collagist who creates with currency. He painstakingly cuts various shapes out of paper money from around the world to form collages with economic and political undertones and overlays. Wilde bases a lot of his works on found images that he develops into his own compositions, which he will lay down on museum board before skillfully applying bits of currency so that they abut in order to keep to the ideal of an even surface. Blek le Rat was born Xavier Prou in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris in 1952. He is considered the godfather of stencil graffiti art. He studied painting and architecture. He began his artwork in Paris in 1981. Since then he has had a great influence on today’s graffiti and “guerilla art” movements, his main motivation being social consciousness and the desire to bring art to the people. The idea for “Swimming Pool” by Leandro Erlich was first conceived in 1998 while the artist was in residence in Houston as part of the Core program. Since then, it was featured at the Venice Biennale and has found a home as part of the permanent collection at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan.

Erlich has constructed a full-size pool, complete with all its trappings, including a deck and a ladder. When approached from the first floor, visitors are confronted with a surreal scene: people, fully clothed, can be seen standing, walking, and breathing beneath the surface of the water.

These pictures are installations from the P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center and The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art.

Dalton Getty is a 45-year-old resident of Bridgeport who turns ordinary pencils into miniature sculptures, without using a magnifying glass

He works very slowly and does not use any special tools: for he needed only a blade, a sewing needle and a very bright light. To protect their vision, the author works for one and half hours a day. One tiny sculpture may take several months, and one creation may take Dalton 2 and a 1/2 years.

Dalton believes that his sculptures are forcing people to stay for at least a few moments to escape from the mad rhythm of modern life and see the beauty in miniature detail.
